Story
The Mehinako people live in the Xingu Indigenous Park in the state of Mato Grosso and they have a population of 286.
They have a well-defined economic system, rituals, exchanges, and intermarriages. Each people is recognized for a certain productive specialty, which allows them to participate in this exchange system with other ethnic groups. These exchanges usually take place in a meeting called “moitará”, where everything from objects to spices are exchanged.
This wooden spatula is carved in the shape of a bird in a semi-lunar shape, and are painted with 2 natural dyes such as annatto and genipap on both sides. This tool is used to spread and handle manioc flour in the beijus tree (large ceramic pot). His name in the Mehinako language is Kute.
Traditionally, Kutes are made in the shape of a half moon, with innovations, nowadays, they are also molded in the shape of animals, connecting the forest with art.
These pieces, in addition to kitchen utensils, can also be transformed into beautiful decorations for the walls.
