Story
These masks were created in the deep forest in Salta, Argentina by the Chané tribe.
In the Chané culture, they are used in the Ceremonia del Arete. This Arete Ceremony is considered to be a party attended by the living and the dead. And these masks prevent people from being harmed by a deceased relative who, out of longing, tries to kidnap the soul of one of their loved ones. They are not only used as a caution method, but also they add a playful nature to these ceremonies where they prevent the attendees from being uncovered in their true personality.
Then, the name yaguareté is of Guaraní origin and means “the true beast”. It is considered a sacred animal. In some native communities and farmers do not name it because they say that when talking about it, it “appears”. For its strength, power, and mystery, this beast stars in legends, myths and also anecdotes, and stories of our pioneers, and of those who today live near the mountain, which are transmitted from generation to generation.
To create it, they use silk floss wood and natural pigments to paint it. Everything is done directly by the artisans.
Limited edition of 25 handmade and unique Chane masks.
